[3/31/2008]-MSNBC appeared to start the trend that a handful other other sources (See additional article locations in the full post) decided to pick up on. A young woman had corrective breast surgery to fix a birth defect. The listed news sources decided to call it a flat out "Breast Augmentation." One source even had the stones to list the growing number of teens receiving breast augmentation in a melodramatic wag of the finger to this poor girl.

The articles supported their angle by making sure they emphasized the fact that she was an 18-yr-old cheerleader. How classy. Bottom line: As you can see in the LATER MSNBC article(REF), she was correcting a birth defect, not out to boost her sex appeal as the other sources would like to insinuate. Wag of the finger to YOU, NBC.

The second reference (REF2) shows the statistics of the disease that, while rare, still shows it is not a new or freak occurrence, and unnecessary focus is placed on this situation because she is an attractive white female(REF3) and a cheerleader. The other news sources bit onto this as well, but at least had the courtesy to stick to the facts about the surgery.

Why is the national news in the first place? Yes, this is a tragedy, especially for the parents. I saw them in an interview this morning on the Today Show and the first question was the reason for the surgery. The poor parents. Obviously the media wanted to dangle this story in hopes something would stick, thus creating buzz. Many people die each year on the operating table from complications. This happens to be yet another BS spin job by the media. *sigh*
