[7/2/2008]-In this widely disseminated AP article, the first paragraph resonates with the recent Gitmo woes:

"Videos showing Leon police practicing torture techniques on a fellow officer and dragging another through vomit at the instruction of a U.S. adviser created an uproar Tuesday in Mexico, which has struggled to eliminate torture in law enforcement."

One would interpret a United States adviser as being an official from the US hired to help reform Mexico's police force, which is commonplace today given the border struggle and the joint war on drugs. Of course this plays on existing feelings of the US and torture given the recent Gitmo trials and waterboarding laws. The shoe fits until 9 paragraphs later:

"He said the English-speaking man was part of a private U.S. security company helping to train the agents, but he refused to give details."

Hired help, not government affiliated.

An esoteric article to say the least. Not sure if they really have to plan for such a capture by the drug lords. Regardless, a disturbing article.

I don't think I agree. If they are hired by the US they are representing our government. The blame SHOULD fall on the US government for not doing a better screening job on the companies they hire! Had they disclosed this fact I think the article would have only improved their argument- that the government is responsible for these terrible acts.

I agree with Carpe Veritas, that the hire help clearly had nothing to do with the military. Even if it had, I know (from personal accounts of close friends and family member who have served in the military/ applied for postions in the police force) that the real life training is vital to help the trainees understand the situations that they could encounting. For example, I know that police trainees have to feel what it is like to be tazered/ peppersprayed, etc. military personelle go without food/ in solitary confinement, ect. so they understand.
